Order coaching books written by Bennett J Lombardo

We are pleased to make available, in e-book format only, two inspirational coaching books written by Bennett J Lombardo. Place your order below.

Bennett J. Lombardo is a full professor of physical education at Rhode Island College. He has coached several sports at several levels of competition. For the major part of his professional life he has focused on specific leadership and interactive behaviours of both teachers and coaches. Ben Lombardo is considered one of the major influential researchers in the area of humanistic coaching.

Humanistic Coaching

The focus of any coaching endeavour, first and foremost, should be the people. Coaches do not play or compete, the athletes do. It is of utmost importance that as adults and leaders we understand that the experience that athletes have should be theirs, truly personally meaningful. Adult structured sport has dominated athletes' experiences and it is time that we, as leaders of sport, ensure that athletes are treated as individuals and that we promote growth and development and enjoyable learning experiences.

As Ben Lombardo says in the preface, "[I] do not pretend to have all the answers. In fact, concepts, theories, and activities [are] presented with which the reader will take issue. If this does take place, then I shall have achieved one of my purposes in committing these thoughts to paper. My hope, however, is to move coaches to reflect on athletics and sport in a different manner and, at the very least, come to a clearer understanding of an approach to athletic coaching and sport which centers on the person within the experienced and which embraces the concept of humanism. If this occurs, then my efforts must be deemed fruitful."

The Humanistic Sport Experience

In this book, Ben Lombardo and his colleagues continue to highlight the humanistic, athlete-centered approach to coaching. Ben is arguably the leader of effecting change in coaching, moving it from an overly administrated, technocratic environment to one that caters for the needs and desire of the athletes. "An athlete participating within a humanistic sport system has the opportunity to function as a complete and integrated being" (p. v).

This book is an anthology of articles of various authors who have primarily written them for the athletes. It is hoped that coaches will read this and have an understanding of 'the educational values of the sport experience'. The editors feel "that sport has much to offer athletes and believe that a more humanized approach can help sport contribute so much more to the development of athletes everywhere. The authors who have contributed to the book include: Hans van der Mars, Bennett J. Lombardo, John T. F. Cheffers, June Nutter, Thomas J. Martinek, Thomas Wandzilak, Donald Hellison, Mary Eagan, Deborah A. Wuest, Victor H. Mancini, Paul Cardoza, Jerry Rubino, Thomas Fay, Joy Butler.
